NASM CPT Exam Prep: What to Study and How to Pass

A study guide for the NASM CPT exam. Covers what topics to focus on, study schedules, practice tests, and tips from trainers who passed.

The NASM CPT exam has 120 questions and a 2-hour time limit. The pass rate is around 65%. That means about 1 in 3 people who take it do not pass the first time. Good study habits make the difference. Here is what to focus on and how to prepare.

What the exam covers

The NASM CPT exam tests six main areas. Some are worth more points than others. Here is the breakdown:

  • 1Program design — The biggest section. Know the OPT model cold.
  • 2Assessment — Overhead squat, push-up test, pulling assessments.
  • 3Exercise science — Anatomy, muscle actions, and energy systems.
  • 4Nutrition basics — Macros, hydration, and scope of practice.
  • 5Client relations — Communication, rapport, and behavior change.
  • 6Professional practice — Scope of practice, safety, and legal basics.

Study plan that works

Give yourself 10 to 12 weeks. Study 5 to 7 hours per week. Read each chapter once, then review the tough ones. Use flashcards for anatomy terms. Take every practice exam NASM offers. When you score 80% or higher on practice tests, you are ready.

Exam day tips

  • Get a full night of sleep. Do not cram the night before.
  • Arrive early. Bring your ID and confirmation number.
  • Flag hard questions and come back to them. Do not get stuck.
  • You have about 1 minute per question. Keep moving.

After you pass: track your CECs
