What makes NASM different
NASM is built around the OPT model (Optimum Performance Training). This is a system for designing programs that fix muscle imbalances and improve movement. If you want to work with clients who have posture problems, old injuries, or movement issues, NASM gives you the tools. The exam tests your ability to assess movement and design corrective programs.
How to study for the NASM CPT exam
NASM sells study packages that include the textbook, online lectures, and practice exams. Plan for 10 to 12 weeks of study. Focus on these areas:
- The OPT model and its five phases of training.
- Overhead squat assessment and common movement faults.
- Basic anatomy: muscles, joints, and planes of movement.
- Program design for different client goals.
After you pass: staying certified
Once you pass, you need 20 CECs every two years plus a current CPR/AED card. The renewal fee is $99. You can earn CECs through NASM courses, workshops, or other approved providers. Getting an extra NASM specialty cert (like CES or PES) also counts toward your total.
